I marvel at the fact that people think Jeffrey Epstein will bring down Donald Trump. Do I need to make a list of the things that did not bring down Donald Trump?
If it seems like Epstein brings him down, it will be because the people behind Project 2025, the corporate world, the donors, and JD Vance visiting Rupert Murdoch have all decided it’s time. Time for Trump to go. Time for Vance to take his place, at least to the public eye.
I think about that. I think about the fact that Trump is stupid and has zero filter, which does, in the end, make him less dangerous than Vance. Vance isn’t smarter, but he will do exactly what they tell him to. Quietly. In the shadows.
Is it possible we haven’t learned that it’s what’s happening in the shadows that’s taking down democracy? Not the court jester keeping us busy in the foreground?
I had a boyfriend a while back, and leave your snide remarks behind, who only wanted to talk about Trump. Every single day. After the 2020 election, I kept trying to explain that, in my opinion, Trump was not the issue. Trump was the shiny object they waved in front of us while the real work happened behind the curtain. He got very angry at me. Very, very angry.
We broke up, which was fine. We weren’t meant to be together anyway. After Trump was reelected, we were talking about something else, and he said, “See? You thought I was wrong, but look what happened. He won.” And I just shook my head, because I still thought he missed the point. Trump didn’t win. They did.
Look — Ghislaine Maxwell is in jail. Oh wait, not jail. Prison. She’s in prison for providing underage girls to men who knew they were underage and screwed them. Illegally. In illegal places. On islands where no one could touch them. And these are very famous men. Democrats and Republicans. Messed up men. Messed up men who are very rich and very powerful. And nothing bad has happened to them. In decades of us knowing who they are. Nothing bad has happened to any of them. Including Andrew.
We know their names. The girls gave their names many times. We have seen their pictures with him. We have seen the manifest. For decades we’ve known their names. This is not a Trump issue. This is an American issue. This is a boy issue. These men belong in jail. The fact that she’s in prison and none of them are is just another shame-on-me moment in my life. I call myself a feminist, and somehow all of this never made it to center stage in my mind because I was too busy with all the other things that keep me up at night.
Truth be told, I’m not up at night anymore. Maybe it’s because I see things more clearly, at least from my point of view. Or maybe I’m losing my mind. You decide.
Quit focusing on Jeffrey Epstein. Look at what’s happening behind the scenes.
They’re testing the waters. Stephen Colbert wasn’t pulled off the air immediately because they weren’t sure they could get away with it. If they had done it all at once, people might have taken to the streets. So they’re soft-launching authoritarianism. They’re watching. Measuring. Seeing how far they can go in getting rid of voices in the media who stand up to them. How long will it take them to have Orban-Hungarian-Authoritarian-control.
What’s the message?
We the people have to make the media stand up to them.
How do we do that? We go to the companies buying ads on late night. We tell those corporations that we want Stephen Colbert reinstated permanently immediately. Because it’s the advertisers, the ad buyers, who provide the money for the people at the top of the media food chain. And those people will decide whether the media bows to Project 2025. And who controls the ad buyers? We the people. We buy the products there’s advertising for. We have to start using our money to tell them we’re not putting up with this. Yes, we have to take to the streets. Yes, I think some blood has to be shed. But we have to start using our money immediately. We have to have the discipline to stop buying things in places that are supporting authoritarianism.
They are not capitulating to Donald Trump. Stop pretending they are.
Wake up and smell the dollar signs. Follow the money. Follow the money. Follow the money.
And quit going on social media and talking about Jeffrey Epstein.
Or don’t. Maybe I’m wrong. I certainly hope so.
